Some might call Airheads the silly putty of the candy world. These tangy and tasty taffy treats can be twisted, tormented and pulled into lengths that would make Stretch Armstrong jealous. Sold in a variety of flavors, some a bit more ambiguous than others, they remain a favored candy treat for those who have the utmost faith in the strength of their fillings.
Created by the European candy maker Perfetti Van Melle in 1986, these strips of taffy are known for their intense flavors that include cherry, green apple, strawberry, orange, “Flamin’ Hot,” “Slammin’ Sour” and the elusive “White Mystery” of which there is much debate over what flavor it actually represents. The company has also released numerous varieties over the years to serve as promotions for Spiderman, Superman, the Disney film, Cars, and even Spongebob Squarepants. The company also concocted a special “Blue Mystery Blast” flavor to be given to passengers aboard JetBlue Airways flights during Halloween of 2007.
While Airheads certainly weren’t the first taffy product on the market, they have remained popular over the years, especially to those that perhaps found products such as Laffy Taffy a little too much of a workout on the jaw. Noticeably softer, and with a flavor array to please just about anyone’s palette, it is certainly no stretch to say that Airheads are a candy sure to remain popular for the foreseeable future.
If you have fond memories of eating these chewy confections back in the day, or if you still swipe a pack from the candy aisle on occasion, we welcome your thoughts in our comments section, as we tip our hats to this delightfully delicious taffy.
