Dance Fever

Dance Fever

If you were a disco fan in the late 1970s, there was one television show you could count on to get your weekly fix – Dance Fever. This amateur dance competition was hosted by Deney Terrio – the disco icon who became famous by teaching John Travolta how to get down in the movie Saturday Night Fever – and he had plenty of moves to demonstrate on this popular series.

Dance Fever consisted of a weekly series of couples cutting loose on the dance floor in a competition judged by three celebrities. These celebrity judges included names such as Barbara Eden, Rick Springfield and Adrian Zmed (who would replace host Deney Terrio in 1985).

The couple who won the contest each week would return for a new match-up. This led to couples eventually squaring off in a final competition with a grand prize of $25,000 (certainly not chump change in the 1970s). When the audience wasn’t being entertained by these regular-joe dancers, Deney and a pair of female dancers called “Motion” would take a spin around the dance floor, showing off the moves that made him famous in the dancing world.

Dance Fever’s blend of hot disco music and cool dance moves made it a syndicated hit. Even after the disco trend had long lost its luster, the show continued to remain popular by introducing the newest 80s dance songs. It managed to stay on the air well into the next decade, taking it’s final bow in 1987. Sadly, It’s no longer seen in syndication, but remains a fond memory for anyone who ever donned a pair of platforms and designer jeans, boogieing the night away at the local disco.

If Dance Fever was part of your must-see television viewing back in the day, we’d love to hear your memories in our comments section.
