Ice Cubes

Ice Cubes

No, they won’t keep you cool on a hot summer’s day, nor do they belong in a tall glass of lemonade. But for those who love chocolate, these little foil-wrapped squares have been delighting the taste buds for decades, thanks to the German confectioner, Moritz, proud makers of Ice Cubes.

Around since the 1930s, Moritz Ice Cubes do have something in common with their frozen water counterpart – they melt very easily. In fact, they must be kept at temperatures below 70 degrees at all times to protect their fragile and airy consistency, which is precisely what has made them so popular over the years. Fans will attest that they melt almost instantly once placed in the mouth, offering a unique chocolate experience, with just a hint of hazelnut added for flavor.

Today, Ice Cubes no longer sport the blue wrapper of yesteryear, which was changed recently to a gold foil package. They are still regularly found on the counters of convenience stores and candy shops. For a dime or so, one can instantly experience the taste and texture that has made them famous for over 80 years.

Unfortunately, due to their fragile nature, these are the only places they are regularly found, unless you opt to purchase them online, which has its own set of difficulties. Order a box of Ice Cubes in August and the UPS man may have quite a mess on his hands. Best to treat them as if they were real ice cubes, and handle them with the love and care they deserve.

If you have a fondness for Moritz Ice Cubes, we’d love to hear your thoughts and memories in our comments section below, as we tip our hats to those little chocolate cubes that have been around a lot longer than most of us.

I would like to know why they don’t sell the blue and silver wrapped ice cubes any more? The gold ones are just not the same. I heard the recipe changed as well. Did they used to have lard in them like Oreo Cookies? What was the change and why can’t they put the blue and silver wrapper back on for the last of the mohicans that would love to enjoy that childhood memory one more time.

Thank you for your considerations in answering my questions.

    Have a great day!
