A pinch of Curly from The Three Stooges, a dash of Rodney Dangerfield throw in for good measure. Mix the ingredients and stuff them into a Great White shark and you have the makings for Jabberjaw – a fondly-remembered aquatic creature animated by Hanna-Barbera. Jabberjaw debuted on Saturday mornings in 1976, and although his stay was somewhat brief, his memory lingers to this day.

Jabberjaw resides in the year 2076, a shark with a great sense of humor and superb drumming ability. The only thing missing is respect, a fact that he constantly mentions to anyone who will listen. Still, his talents land him in the touring teenage band, The Neptunes. The band consists of Biff on guitar, Bubbles on piano, Shelly on tambourine, and Clam-head on upright bass.

Rounding out the group is Jabberjaw, who not only acts as percussionist, but also as chief negotiator for the band. Their towering dorsal-finned drummer in tow, the band sets out on the underwater road in their Aquacar, bringing their own brand of pop music to various submerged locales. And, like so many of their cartoon brethren, they have this unfortunate knack for encountering dastardly criminals at seemingly every turn.

Jabberjaw enjoyed two seasons on ABC, until the series ended in 1978. That wasn’t the end of the snappy shark, however, who would resurface as a competitor on Scooby’s All-Star Laff-A-Lympics. The memorable voice of Jabberjaw was provided by prolific voice actor Frank Welker who, incidentally, also provided the voice of Scooby Doo and many other characters on the show.

Although Jabberjaw’s time in the undersea spotlight was brief, we’re pretty sure some of you have some fond memories of this celebrated shark. We welcome all of your recollections in our comments section below, as we offer another tip of the hat to the Saturday mornings of yesteryear, here at Retroland.
