Star Trek Technology

Over at our Retrotalk discussion boards, posters have been discussing the technology of The Jetsons and how we stack up today against the cartoon’s vision of the future. Truth be told, however, when one uses Star Trek as a gauge, we seem to be making more progress. Continue reading...

Mr. Whipple

Mr Whipple

Perhaps you remember the bespectacled store manager, Mr. Whipple. Always concerned about the quality of his merchandise, the poor guy had a heck of time keeping his female patrons from squeezing the Charmin toilet tissue, in a series of memorable television commercials that spanned over two decades. Continue reading...

Rainy Days

Rainy Days

It’s safe to assume that an adult wrote those words. Granted, kids tend to have a love/hate relation with precipitation, mostly because they aren’t allowed to do what they desire – to run gleefully through a downpour, stomping puddles and splashing all who dare stand too close. Everything is slippery, mud is plentiful and clothes are expendable. If only they could get their parents to agree. Continue reading...

Shopping Malls

Shopping Malls

Today, we remember the glory days of the shopping mall, back when we revered them for all they had to offer, especially if you were a teenager. We arrived in groups, usually after convincing one of our parents to drive us over and drop us off for the day. We sought out our friends and our love interests, we exchanged our hard earned allowance for slice of pizza or ice cream cone, and we made sure still had enough money left to convert it into as many quarters as possible, for every mall worth its weight had a respectable arcade. 3-2-1 Contact

3-2-1 Contact

With an immensely catchy opening theme and the cool ways they incorporated science into everyday situations, the 3-2-1 Contact crew became a staple in after school TV viewing. Most fans can still sing along to the theme song and all remember the show with nostalgic fondness. A few may even credit the series with instilling an early interest in science. All in all, the consensus is that they don’t make ‘em like they used to anymore. Continue reading...

Pillow Fight

Pillow Fights

It’s hard not to love pillows. They offer us a place to rest our weary heads at night and prop us up when watching a movie. And they also tempt our dark side on occasion. Look at that younger sibling watching cartoons without a care in the world. Wouldn’t a wallop to the side of his or her head feel pretty good right about now? And maybe that lull in the slumber party festivities needs a kickstart - with one mere swat from a pillow quickly escalating into an all-out slugfest of puffy proportions. The bottom line is – wherever there are a stack of pillows and a few unsuspecting souls, the time is ripe for a pillow fight. Continue reading...

Flexible Flyer

Ah, the Flexible Flyer... the state of the art snow sled in 1889 and still the best choice for an authentic, sturdy, steerable sled! Continue reading...

Love Beads

Love Beads

They didn’t call it the "Summer of Love" for nothing. If there was one concept the peace-loving counter culture of the 60s embraced more than any other it was the genuine love they felt for their fellow man. And what better way to express this affection than through a set of love beads, man. Can you dig it? Continue reading...
