What is Retroland?

Retroland is a social networking site developed to unite people over the common bond of treasures from our youth. You can poke about and enjoy our original content as a guest, but becoming a site member opens up all kinds of fun doors. Members can contribute to the Retropedia, post on the discussion boards, and recreate a virtual scrapbook of all their favorite things (heavy on the Pac-Man and bell bottoms; light on the cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudel.)

What is the Retropedia?

The Retropedia is a compendium of pop culture history. Each entry features an original synopsis by the Retroland team, but the real star of the Retropedia is you, and the many other people like you who’ve uploaded their memories and their own scrapbook photos, creating a one-of-a-kind interactive pop culture encyclopedia. At Retroland, we understand that it wasn’t the toy that was important—it’s the way you felt about that toy. It wasn’t the rock star that meant something, it was the way the music made you feel. You are a part of the story; you deserve to add your own piece to the jigsaw puzzle of the Retropedia.

How do I leave a memory?

Once you find a Retropedia entry that lights the corner of your mind, Click on the Memories tab and follow the “Add a Memory” link. Include your caption and your memory in the text boxes. If you’d like, you can choose to upload a photo, or include one you’ve already uploaded. Hit the “preview” button to double-check, and submit it when you’re ready. The more memories and photos you upload, the more chances you’ll have to get a gold star from other users.

What is a gold star?

Remember when you got that spelling test back with the shiny gold star sticker on it? Retroland’s gold star system allows you to receive a pat on the back just like you did in kindergarten. The more gold stars your memories and photos get, the higher their rating will be.

How do I give a gold star?

Giving a gold star is a quick way to let other members know somebody liked their Farrah Fawcett hair picture or their story about the day they saw Simon and Garfunkel in Central Park. All you have to do is click the “give this a gold star!” link on the memory and you’ll leave an anonymous warm fuzzy for would-be Farrah or the concertgoer (the lucky punk!) If you don’t want to be anonymous, you’ll need to leave a gold star comment.

How do I leave a gold star comment?

If you don’t want to leave an anonymous gold star, you can add a comment so the user will know that the gold star came from you. After you have given them a gold star, a link to “add a comment to your gold star” will appear. If you click that link, you’ll see a text box where you can type in a message. Hit submit and it’ll appear on the memory page, as well as their My Retroland page.

What is My Retroland?

Kick your shoes off! My Retroland is your personal homepage at the site. “My Activity” gives you a snapshot of recent replies to your discussion posts, recent gold stars you’ve received, and recent memories and photos posted by your friends and to your favorites. “About Me” is your public profile. There are also tabs that display your favorites, photos, memories, discussions, and friends.

How do I make something my Favorite?

Declaring your undying love for the Jackson Five is as easy as 1, 2, 3! All you have to do is click on the “add to favorites” link on the entry page, and Do-Re-Me, it’ll be added to your list.

How do I delete a Favorite?

A little embarrassed about the actions of your favorite Jackson? Just click on the “your favorite” link on the entry page, and it’ll be deleted from your list.

How do I make someone my Friend?

Don’t be a wallflower! All you have to do is click on the “add to friends” link on their member page, and they’ll be added to your list.

How do I delete a Friend?

Just click on the “your friend” link on their member page, and they’ll be deleted from your list. (Just let them down gently; that’s all we ask.)

How do I find a certain member?

You can search by birth year, current location, hometown, or username on the Retropeople page.

How can I make the font size larger?

Try changing your browser viewing preferences. You can do this by going to the “View” tab and changing the text size. Many browsers also include a shortcut by pushing the Control and “+” keys.

Do you make/stock/know how to find my favorite obscure item?

We’re sorry, we are not affiliated with any of the brands or items you see here on the site; we just offer a fun point of view about their history, and a place for you to connect with others who enjoyed them.

Would you consider adding an entry for my favorite obscure item?

Certainly! Our staff creates new entries every day. If you have a suggestion for a new entry, please send it to suggestions@retroland.com and we will definitely consider it.
