The classic Warner Bros. cartoon characters got the arcade game treatment by Atari in 1985 in the fast-paced chase game Road Runner. The player controlled the speedy bird in his madcap dash from the ingenious coyote over desert highways. Along the way, the road runner ate heaps of bird seed to replenish his strength and drank lemonade to combat the heat while Wile E. did his darnest to catch up.
The coyote threw many obstacles in the road runners path that the bird could clear by jumping, like mines, potholes and boulders. Points were tallied according to how many seeds were eaten and eating bird shot pellets also increased your score but they enabled the coyote to follow you on jet-powered roller skates, brandishing a large ACME magnet.
Extra points were awarded for your ability to lure or trick the coyote over a high cliff or any other doomed scenarios that were typical fare in the original cartoon. The familiarity and sheer hilarity of the cartoon premise were enough to draw scores of fans to Road Runner who got a kick out of outsmarting the cleverest coyote professor in the wild.
