Release History:

1983 - Congo Bongo

Manufacturer:

Sega
Sega's answer to the popular Donkey Kong game came in 1983 with Congo Bongo, which coincidentally also featured a crazed simian throwing things at the player in the game. The player could only dodge and evade the projectiles but not fire anything back, probably because even video game gorillas were endangered.

The four levels of Congo Bongo required the player to traverse a variety of terrains. The first level involved a hill that should be climbed while a gorilla threw coconuts at you and smaller monkeys tried to latch on to you. Too many monkeys on your back and over the cliff you went. In the second level, the player had to navigate through grassland with the aid of several interconnected platforms while avoiding snakes and scorpions. Level 3 was lousy with charging rhinos that could be avoided or jumped over but you had to beware large puddles that would end your life. The final level is a lagoon that must be crossed, using lily pads, logs and the odd wading hippo to skip to the other shore.

It's anybody's guess whether Congo Bongo would've been as successful as Donkey Kong, but the death knell had already sounded for arcade games when Congo Bongo debuted. Farewell, Bongo, we hardly knew ye.
