Flash Gordon was a popular comic strip character in the 1930s that spawned three even more popular film serials in the later part of the decade. A modern version of the legend was made into a feature film in 1980 and Bally released a pinball machine the same year to coincide with the movie debut.
Flash, the intergalactic hero, has to face and defeat the evil planetary ruler Ming the Merciless. Accompanying Flash on his quest were his sweetheart, Dale Arden, and various aliens he meets, like Prince Vultan.
All that conflict between good and evil was handsomely rendered into a pinball machine that featured sounds and music. The split-level playfield included all the standard obstacles like bumpers and spinners and when lit, the malevolent face of Ming himself stared down any player brave enough to challenge his authority.
