Ankle bracelets have been around in the U.S. since the ‘50’s, but their Middle-Eastern roots give them an air of exotic sexiness that has maintained their popularity through the decades.
Also called anklets, these chains worn around the ankles were sported by women in the ‘50’s with ankle-length bobby socks to put a rebellious spin on convention. Also popular were charm bracelets, where each charm was a personal statement. Anklets featuring copies of Elvis’s dog tags were also a trendy style. When the bobby sock faded from fashion, the ankle bracelet remained to grace bare skin.

The bracelets gained newfound popularity in the disco era, as ‘70’s divas flashed the gold on their ankles as they spun on the dance floor. The ‘80’s featured name plates and more charm anklets, and the ‘90’s gave us Indian-inspired bells hanging from ankles during the hippie revival.
Styles may come and go, but the flash of metal on an ankle looks like it’s here to stay.
