Founded in California in 1978, Banana Republic started with just two stores and a mail order catalog. They focused on safari-themed clothing for the urban adventurer. Clothing and accessories giant Gap Inc. acquired Banana Republic in 1983 and expanded the brand to a national audience. The olives and khakis of the original stores gave way to the more upscale Gap style that it is today.
