What was a parent to do in the 1950s, when the specter of teenage angst started rearing its ugly, cultural head? Make sure you did everything you could to make your kids look like they had traditional values, at least on the outside.
Parents bonded the family together by dressing in matching outfits. Daughters would dress like their moms, sons would dress like their dads. Often, brothers and sisters would dress identical as well, with the boy wearing pants and the girl wearing a skirt. All this apparently signified that boys were industrious and hardworking like their dads, and girls were happy homemakers like their moms.
Oh, if it were only that easy. The look was cute, but it didn’t stop the big, bad 60s from coming along and ruining everything.
