For those in the 70s who found turtlenecks to be constrictively uncomfortable, the cowl neck was a welcome trend. They offered a wider, looser fitting fabric that cascaded in waves around the neck and eliminated that choking sensation of their predecessor. People soon embraced the softer angora and cashmere styles - which allowed for both an elegant look and some much needed breathing room.
Designer, Madame Vionnet first created the cowl neck design in the 30s. Over the next forty years, it would evolve into the overflowing, extra-wide version that most people remember from the 70s. Adorned with a small necklace, such as a heart charm, it was a combination of classy and comfortable that just about anyone could fall in love with. Within the first minute of wearing one, it was clear that given the choice between a turtleneck and a cowl neck sweater, there was simply no comparison.
