Any member of the US military is well acquainted with the hairstyle known as the flat top or crewcut. It is the regulation haircut for all members of the armed service. But, it has been equally embraced by many a youth who want to project that same rugged, no-nonsense and adult appearance of disciplined servicemen everywhere.

The crewcut differs from the more extreme buzz cut in that it isn’t a complete shearing of the entire scalp. Rather, a quarter-inch or so of hair is mercifully left on the top, cut so that it is completely flat in appearance. Coupled with neat set of sideburns, it is the ultimate in conformance, a style that states in no uncertain terms the conservatism of the wearer. And for those up for the challenge, it offers at least a small styling opportunity for those longer hairs on top.

Longer locks are for the radicals, buzz cuts are for the boys – but a crewcut is the ultimate in conservative fashion and will likely remain popular as long as there are those who want to distinguish themselves with a style that says, “I’m an adult and I mean business.”
