CATCH PHRASE:
Before every office had a Xerox copier, people used “ditto machines” to make copies. Naturally, then, it was Dittos jeans that spawned the copycat phenomenon in denimwear fashions. Designers hadn’t started actually putting their names on your fanny yet. But Dittos were the brand teen girls had to have.
These weren’t the denims of the 1940’s, when jeans symbolized working people’s solidarity. First of all, Dittos were form-fitting, to show off your shape. They also came in different sexy styles and a variety of great colors. If wearing slinky Dittos jeans didn’t get the boys’ attention, well – at least you couldn’t say you didn’t have the right jeans.
And you had to have ‘em, ‘cause all your friends did. Dittos were there at the beginning of the great wave of label hysteria. Gotta get the same brand the “cool” girls have! Then at least you had a chance of being one of them.
