Sure, the 80s gave pop culture a shot of glitz and glam, but it was also the time when the t-shirt and jean combo was king. Despite the immense popularity of the casual look, regular Joes were getting turned away from fancy restaurants left and right. Rebuffed by signs being put up by maître d’s stating “Coat and tie required” someone finally had enough and created one of fashion’s silk-screened favorites: the faux tuxedo shirt.
The most basic of the tuxedo t-shirts was a white screen print of a dress shirt under a coat collar with a bow-tie. Fancier versions started showing up, with red roses printed where the little pocket would be, colored ties and almost 3-D imaging! Wow! Who needed to mess around with the stupid tie now that we had this? The faux tuxedo shirt had the comfort of a cotton tee with the panache of a suit. Admittance was practically guaranteed.
