MEMORIES:

There were many full-on-top tight-around-the-ankle pant styles during the 80s, many of them first introduced (or revived) during the 70s. ...  More »
When MC Hammer announced “It’s Hammer time!” he meant it was time to put on tremendously wide genie pants and dance around.

The 90’s rap star popularized the ultra-wide pants that were gathered at the ankle in his videos and concerts. Even the crotch of the pants was low enough to hit between the knees. Hammer dressed in gold lame outfits encrusted with sparkles and he became as much about the look as the he was about the music. Kids mimicked him by wearing the same wide pants – but maybe not so much with the gold lame.

Even denim took a cue from the wide trend. 80’s slim pants gave way to pleated waists and wide legs, all tapering down to the ankle in the shape of a V. Not a flattering style for anyone, and the look eventually faded away.
