It’s hard to believe, but before Hush Puppies Shoes hit the market in 1958, there were no casual shoe options for adults. Needed to mow the lawn? Just slip into and old pair of those stiff and uncomfortable wingtips or oxfords. There was no other choice.
Victor Krause, the founder of Hush Puppies developed the super-soft shoe using a tanning process that his footwear company, Wolverine World Wide, used during the Korean War. His first style was the traditional suede oxford, and it was so successful that one in ten adults had a pair on their feet. Krause then introduced an expanded line of shoes for men, women, and kids in an array of styles and colors.
An early 90s advertising campaign reinvigorated the line, even as they introduced loafers, sneakers, sandals, and boots to their collection. After all, soft, comfortable shoes never go out of style.
