But as the decade wound to a close, the hippies revolted from the popular fashion trends of the day and did something completely unexpected – they embraced the exact opposite of the mini skirt, replacing it with maxi skirts, which harkened back to the conservative days of the pioneers and even Victorian times and left the parents of these flower power kids completely bewildered.
Akin to the peasant wear of a bygone age, these dresses were often acquired as the result of long hours searching various thrift stores. They were often worn in conjunction with headscarves and other handicrafts of yesteryear to lend authenticity to the look.
And as parents looked on, completely confused as to why their eccentric kids had suddenly discarded the overtly sexy mini skirts for attire that suggested baking bread on a farm, they were resigned to accept the fact that, no matter how hard they tried, they were never going to be able to anticipate the fashion trends of the younger generations. But it was just another example of fashion repeating itself, often when it is least expected.
