MEMORIES:
Popular in the 80s, the peplum was yet another fashion resurgence from an earlier era – the 40s to be exact. Before then, they were known as basques, which loosely translates into “additional skirt.” (Who would have thunk it?)
And just because women had replaced the primary skirts of their wardrobe with pants, shorts, and jackets, didn’t mean that they couldn’t still enjoy the glory of the peplum. This extra dose of flounce could still be achieved regardless of the modern garments it was paired with. It was a tad excessive, to be sure, which made it a perfect addition to the excessive fashion habits of the 80s, where more was always better.
