Rosie the Riveter was the original Riot Grrrl. Well, there was no actual Rosie. Her manufactured image was part of World War II propaganda encouraging women to work in the factories to help the war effort. The shipping over of so many male soldiers had greatly depleted the American work force, and industry needed workers to make the tools necessary to keep the war machine moving along. When the boys returned, however, they found that many women enjoyed their new working lifestyles, and the traditional roles of women as mothers, wives, and housekeepers would never be the same again.
