“Ooh, la la… Sasson!”

Even the New York Rangers got in on the act with designer jeans, and apparently, Sasson was just the pant for them.  Much like today’s designer jean craze with Seven Jeans and True Religion, many fashion mavens and mavericks of the late 70s felt that they were only as good as the name on the back of their pants.  The designer craze really took hold  in 1978 with Jordache, and picked up steam with the likes of Sergio Valente, Gloria Vanderbilt, Chemin de Fer, and of course, Sasson.  Sasson was unisex, finally giving fashion-forward Freds an option outside of standard Levis and Wranglers.

For those who might have wondered throughout the years whether this was the handiwork of famed hair guru, Vidal Sassoon, the answer is no; he stayed to hair, where he was able to make a fortune, we’re sure.  Sasson jeans were manufactured by Sasson Jean, Inc., a company that was known for a wide variety of fits for any figure.  Business boomed with the form-fitting, skin-tight look that became popular with the Charlie’s Angels-type.

Sasson eventually collapsed under a variety of pressures, nearly ensuring that the brand won’t likely resurface.  Today, collectors can find their favorite pairs on the internet, but little is to be found elsewhere.  Ooh, la la! will just have to be used for a new brand out there, ready to take the designer throne.
