Skorts!
Also known in some circles as ‘culottes,’ skorts came on the fashion scene to offer ladies a choice between the comfort of shorts and the girliness of skirts.  The concept, essentially, has been around for centuries, though it has been modern fashion’s twist that has given it the look it has today.

The hot ticket item of the 60s, the ultra-mini dress was too much for some girls, and with good reason.  Not everyone wants to show off their undergarments to passers-by.  So, for the modest there was the ultra-mini dress skort, allowing them to zip up their go-go boots without the worry of showing their bits and pieces – just the shorts underneath!  The 70s loosened the style with the ‘pant skirt,’ which would evolve into a little wrap skirts with shorts underneath.  The style was clever, since most couldn’t detect the shorts underneath.

For the following decade, unless you count the ultra-wide shorts that looked like a dress, the skort was hardly seen.  The look resurfaced in the 1990s, featuring sporty styles that were great for the tennis court and school alike.
