From a tormenting ritual of childhood to fashion statement, who could have guessed that what was once known as the dreaded ‘wedgie’ would soon become a practical and desirable look. Such is the case with thong underwear, perhaps one of the most revealing styles to ever find mainstream acceptance.

It was really a matter of simple necessity; bikini briefs meant a series of unsightly lines in the posterior area that just didn’t flatter the tight pants of the day. With the only other option being forgoing underwear completely, the thong proved to be the perfect answer to this dilemma - as long as one didn’t mind the wedgie-like feeling that accompanied wearing them.

Thong underwear emerged in the 90s, a decade when all things booty-related were the topic de’ jour for the songsmiths of the day. Wreckx-N-Effect gave the world “Rump Shaker, MC Shy D followed with “Big Booty Girls” and Sir Mix-A-Lot provided the anthem for an era with “Baby’s Got Back.” Almost overnight, the term “junk in the trunk” took on a whole new meaning.

And with the decade of the Booty Call, the thong provided the magic that made all of that tight-hugging clothing possible. Gyms were filled with women wearing t-back leotards, coupled with lycra bike shorts for an illusion of near nudity. And on beaches around the world, men were treated to perhaps the most beloved fashion statement they had ever encountered, floss-backed bikinis. It was if they had died and gone to heaven.

And the love for the t-back is one that has continued on into the next decade. Songs such as Sisqo’s “Thong Song” continue to immortalize a fashion trend that every red-blooded male prays each night will never go out of style.
