For such a simple piece of clothing, socks have seen their fair share of style changes through the decades. There were the knee-high rainbow striped tube socks. There were the weirdly uncomfortable toe-socks. There were the messy-looking slouch socks. And finally, there were the ankle socks, whose popularity dictated fashion everywhere.
They came in a multitude of prints and fabrics – lace, neon, smiley faces, checkerboard, cartoons, and geometric prints. They made for the perfect look when combined with high heeled pumps for girls. Boys wore pastel shorties with Huarachi sandals. Everywhere you looked, the kids were wearing ankle socks, visible in the space between where the highwaters ended and the penny loafers began.
