Straight from the deserts of Cairo came the design of a shoe that would be embraced by a generation of stylish English lads who had likely never once stepped foot in a sand dune of any kind.

Clarks of England first manufactured the desert boot at the turn of the century. This ankle-high footwear was both comfortable and sleek and constructed of suede atop a rubber crepe sole. Available in a number of neutral dark colors, the desert boot was both innovative and exotic. And years after their introduction, the style would catch the eye of British mods who incorporated the shoe into their trend-setting wardrobe. They were durable, lightweight and could even protect sensitive ankles from the high temperatures of motorscooter engines, the preferred method of travel for the stylish subculture.

Even today, desert boots remain popular with those who seek a sleek, minimalist style that doesn’t sacrifice comfort for fashion. And should one find themselves stranded in the middle of a mountain of sand dunes, a finer shoe couldn’t be found to mull around the Mohave or stroll around the Sahara.
