When Scartett O’Hara made heads turn in the 1939 film Gone With the Wind, women were charmed by her gorgeous Southern fashions. Pretty and quaint, the Southern bonnet was the perfect piece of sweet nostalgia. ‘40’s hat designers condensed the wide-brimmed hats from the film into modern bonnets with a small brim that perfectly framed the face. Shirley Temple made the bonnet fashionable for little girls, as did the 'Dionne Quinteplets', the famous family of five identical sisters.
A nice feature of the bonnet was the neck bow – a soft, satin bow that tied under the chin, and secured the bonnet to the head in blustery weather. Little girls could run around and play, without worrying that their hat was going to fly off their head. And they still looked pretty.
