MEMORIES:
Kris Kross made us jump… Jump! And made more than a few teens and pre-teens leave home dressed normally - only to turn their clothes backward before showing up at school.
Once upon a time there were two kids – a rap duo, if you will – that went by the name Kris Kross. They got popular on some catchy hooks, beats and chants, but more than just about anything else, they were known for their trademark backward and baggy clothes. At the time, hip hop had seen its share of fashion fads and gimmicks - most not really catching on - but the backward clothing trend really hit it big with mainstream kids.
After a couple of years of increasing our dexterity to put our button fly’s on backward we were done with it. Once or twice a year, we’d get to relive it for those wacky dress up days at school… You know… Clash Day… Dress Like a Hippie Day… and Backward Day. The pop cultural jury is still out on whether it’s a shame or a blessing that we don’t have to do that anymore.
