Each and every Easter, enough Peeps are consumed to go around the equator… and then some! For over 50 years, the pink and yellow Peeps have brought smiles to the young and old alike; so much that there are over 200 websites, unofficial of course, devoted to their favorite fluffy confection, Peeps!
Peep devotees know that before the little chicks could be found at the grocery store, Peeps were made as early as the 1920s by the Rodda Candy Company of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The little yellow Peeps were made with care by hand. Intrigued by the fluffy fellows, Just Born (the makers of chewy candy favorites like Hot Tamales and Mike And Ike) picked up the company and started mass-producing them in 1953. Though they brought production of Peeps to a more efficient level by making many at a time – it still took a whopping 27 hours to make a single Peep!
Today, Peeps are completed at the rapid speed of 6 minutes. They also come in a wide variety of colors and shapes, from the classic chicks and bunnies to seasonal Peeps, which made their debuts throughout the 1960s. Unlike their Easter compatriots, the Cadbury Crème Egg and Robin’s Eggs, Peeps can be found outside of Spring-time festivities. Bats, cats and pumpkins fill the candy aisles during Halloween, and Christmas trees, Snow and Gingerbread Men help make the Christmas season bright (and sweet!). During the Valentine season, feel free to give your sweetie a heart-shaped Peep. Summer even finds a warm-weathered home for our sugar-coated friends with red-white-and-blue chicks and star-shaped Peeps. All these shapes and sizes help Peeps live up to their new motto: “Always in Season.”
No matter what time of year you’re munching on Peeps, there are lots of great things you can do with them… ways to experiment, if you will. Not only to Peeps make for excellent decoration and on the fly toys for kids to play with, big kids can have fun with Peeps in the microwave. That’s where the real magic happens. There’s little to compare to a marshmallow chick or bunny growing to Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man proportions after about 45 seconds on high. Beware! Go too far with your Peeps and they’ll pop, making for one of the most difficult-to-clean messes out there.
So, whether you’re out to fix a sweet tooth or just want to have fun playing with squishy candy – there’s always a Peep ready to help satisfy any marshmallowy need.
