Many have wondered throughout the years, “How did 3 Musketeers get its name?”  Certainly, there is Alexandre Dumas’ oft-filmed novel, The Three Musketeers, but – what does one bar consisting of two parts have to do with that?  And what to think of the European name for 3 Musketeers - Milky Way?  How confusing!  (Incidentally, the European version of Milky Way is the Mars Bar. It would appear to be some sort of conspiracy.)  Some have gone so far as to suggest that the wrappers were mistakenly switched upon American release, which would certainly make more sense since Milky Way does have three ingredients.  Hmmm…

To get to the truth, one must go all the way back to the candy bar's origins, over three-quarters of a century ago. Nine years after the introduction of the Milky Way bar, 3 Musketeers was created in 1932 as three separate bars, each with their own unique nougat flavor; vanilla, strawberry and chocolate, coated with milk chocolate.  Due to rising costs and wartime rationing, by the time the mid-1940s came along, 3 Musketeers was instead offered as a single, chocolate-coated, chocolate-nougat bar. Each bar is scored twice with hollow points so that the bar can be easily be broken into three pieces, enough to share with friends. For the health-conscious eaters of candy bars, 3 Musketeers may be big on chocolate, but not so much when it comes to fat. Three Musketeers are, on average, 45% lower in fat than other popular candy bars, according to Mars Candy, which produces the bar.

Throughout most of the year, fans of 3 Musketeers can only find their favorite bar in the traditional chocolate form.  However it can be found in a variety of sizes, from the standard candy bar length, to the “fun size” (think Halloween) to tiny miniatures.  In the springtime, those who fondly remember the other flavors can at least occasionally find their vanilla nougat counterpart for sale down the Easter candy aisle.

And whether you are an "all for one" kind of person, content to hoard your candy all to yourself, or an "one for all" sharer of all that is good and sweet, and no matter what name you happen to call it in your neck of the woods, Three Musketeers is there for you; big on chocolate but not on fat. What more could anyone ask?
