First you take the peanuts and you mash 'em, you mash 'em
You mash 'em mash 'em mash'em
For your peanut, peanut butter
(And jelly!)
Kids come to supper with vim and vigor and glee for peanut butter and jelly-- and adults do, too! Did you know that the peanut butter and jelly sandwich was added to the military MRE (Meal, Ready-to-Eat) due to the high demand from soldiers who missed their PB&Js while out in the field.
The phenomenon took all of America by storm after the non-separating variety of peanut butter was invented in 1922. This popular and very distinctly American sandwich is easy to make - just about anyone can do it! All it takes is two pieces of bread, one side with peanut butter and the other side with jelly or jam, and voila! A culinary masterpiece! Or "a la peanut butter sandwiches," as the Amazing Mumford would say.
Of course there are variations on the theme: plain ol' peanut butter or just-jelly sandwiches, chunky peanut butter, peanut butter and honey, the peanut butter and banana combo, even a fluffernutter-- the original peanut butter and marshmallow sandwich which appeared on jars of Fluff brand marshmallow cream. Thanks to Goober Grape, you can even buy your peanut butter and jelly pre-mixed in the jar! No matter your favorite, you can have it just the way you like it; roasted, toasted, cut in half, into quarters, triangles, crust on or off or standing over the sink. (Okay, that's just me. Sometimes I just can't wait!)
