Pop-Tarts

Forget about your Pastry Swirls and your silly Snak-Stix... we're talking the real deal: Pop Tarts.  Though the makers of Pop Tarts weren't the first to come up with the toasty confection, they capitalized on Post's marketing mistakes with their version, Country Squares.  Released at a time when the masses were laughing at country bumpkins like Gomer Pyle, Barney Fife and The Beverly Hillbillies, and being called a "square" only happened when you were nerdy and un-hip, Country Squares just never took off.  Six months later, Kellogg's came along with their version, the hip-sounding Pop Tarts (a take-off on the Pop Art trend of the time.)  Advertised by Milton the Toaster, and filled with great flavors like strawberry, blueberry, cinnamon and apple-currant, grocery stores couldn't keep the shelves stocked with the hot item.

To kids now, it might be hard to believe that Pop Tarts were only available without frosting.  Kellogg's originally thought that icing would melt, but through innovation they found a way to put on non-melting icing and sprinkles.  If frosting isn't your thing, however, you can still find Pop Tarts in their unadorned form.  Pop Tarts remain one of Kellogg's most popular items, and include flavors like chocolate, s'mores, raspberry and French Toast.  Other forgettable flavors have come and gone, such as Frosted Peanut Butter and Jelly (sounds good in theory, doesn't it?), Chocolate Peppermint and Chocolate and Cherry Chip.  (Can we get an "eww?"  Thanks.)  So, whether you like 'em frosted or bare, toasted or untoasted, Pop Tart fans will tell you it's the breakfast of champions.
