Cocoa Puffs

Americans have gone cuckoo for cocoa puffs for the last five decades, thanks to the help of the manic mascot, Sonny, and those loveable Cocoa Puff Kids.  With enough chocolaty, sugary goodness to power any kid through the morning, it’s no wonder the crunchy goodness of Cocoa Puffs has remained on grocery store shelves and in the hearts and memories of kids everywhere.

One of the most important features of Cocoa Puffs (as any kid will tell you) is their ability to stay crunchy for long durations.   Unlike their many cocoa competitors, like Cocoa Crispies, Cocoa Pebbles, and Count Chocula – these Kix-like spheres remained as hard as could be for a good few minutes.  As the milk settled into the mix, the flavor only improved, making “drinking your milk” after the cereal was gone a much better proposal.

The Cocoa Puffs frenzied mascot, Sonny, began showing up on the Cocoa Puffs boxes in the early 60s, along with the original cuckoo bird, Gramps.  In one commercial, Gramps called his grandson “Sonny” and the rest is history.  Sonny became instantly popular with audiences, simply because he would absolutely lose his mind at the mere mention of Cocoa Puffs, and soon became the mascot for the oh-so-Hershey-chocolaty spheres of wonder.

You might even recall that once upon a time, Sonny was a brown bird with a pink striped shirt.  Those days are gone, however. Take a look at the box the next time you stroll down the cereal aisle and you will notice that Sonny has had quite the makeover (Is there anyone in Hollywood that hasn’t?). Today, he’s taken on a more trendy appearance, sporting a new orange color, sans clothing. But as long as he keeps hawking those yummy puffs of chocolaty goodness, he can wear (or not wear) whatever he wants. We’ll even refrain from judging his sanity - as long as he keeps delivering those Cocoa Puffs, that is.
