CATCH PHRASE:
Few have maintained such long-lasting cereal aisle prowess as the one and only Trix. Introduced in 1954, the fruit-flavored sugary spheres caught an audience that has spanned generations, breakfast bowl after breakfast bowl. Raspberry red, lemony yellow and orangety… orange have been a delight to see floating around in milky cereal bowls, but… Silly Rabbit… Trix are for kids!
Before there was a Trix Rabbit, there were other would-be cereal stars. Mickey Mouse even once had a stint on early cereal boxes. The Big Cheese was there to promote Disneyland’s Adventureland Once upon a time, the face of Trix was The Stick Figure Boy. Clearly, he wasn’t eating enough Trix, so in 1959, General Mills set out to find something new and improved. What happened grew into a nationwide phenomenon. The premise of the commercials has remained the same throughout the decades. Two kids, a boy and a girl, who go on to catch the Rabbit before he can eat the Trix. They then admonish him with the now familiar tagline, “Silly Rabbit, Trix are for kids!” Oh, others have tried to help Rabbit in, perhaps, kinder ways. Dr. Hypnosis gave it his best, though ultimately failed to cure Rabbit of his fruit-flavored cereal desires.
After finding success with the new icon, the once little-know Trix cereal launched into breakfast superstardom. Little has changed through the years. There is the occasional new scenario, but the result for Rabbit is just the same: he goes home, wherever that may be, on an empty stomach. Maybe that’s how Stick Figure Boy kept so lean. Food for thought!
Referenced in movies, like Cruel Intentions and more recently, Kill Bill, Vol. 1, television shows, like The Golden Girls, (where Sophia says, tongue-in-cheek, “Silly Rabbi, tricks are for kids!”), The Simpsons, and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Even role-playing card games like Magic: The Gathering have included references to the famous breakfast cereal. Time and time again, the public at large proves what a hit both the cereal and its famous face have become; the cornerstone of every nutritious ad campaign!
