Inspired by Big Boy’s classic double-decker hamburger, McDonalds created its own stackable snackable. Much like the Big Boy version, this sandwich has three buns – one in the middle to help stop the sauce from sloshing out of the bread borders. The Big Mac has been available since the early 70s, and has become one of the most widely-recognized symbols of America and capitalism at large.
The multi-pattied burger is popular around the world, and in some restaurants the “Mega Mac” is offered. The Mega Mac is made with a whopping four patties and an extra slice of cheese. As McDonald’s has become more health-conscious, the size of the Big Mac, as well as a number of other items, has been reduced – a move that is popular with some, and less-popular with others.
The Big Mac is available and comparable worldwide. Few foods can lay claim to be a tool for measuring economies. In the mid-1980s, the term Big Mac Index was referenced as a way to measure the purchasing power of two currencies between similarly manufactured and priced goods. It also gave rise to the word “burgernomics” forming the way the world has looked at globalization and the economy.
Referenced in music, television and film, the Big Mac has truly become an icon. Though the jingle isn’t used in commercials today, it has been seared into our hungry conscious: “Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun!” Would you like some fries with that?
