It was every chocolate chip cookie fan's dream come true - Cookie Crisp! Like the commercials said, they looked like chocolate chip cookies but stayed crispy in milk... most of the time. Created by Ralston in 1971, Cookie Crisp would take on a life of its own with a colorful cast of animated characters found in the brand's zany commercials, some of which that demonstrated just how prevalent the societal problem of cookie larceny really is.
Holding a special place in the hearts of kids who grew up during the day-glo days of the 1970s is Cookie Jarvis. This wizard came "from afar, to change your dish into a cookie jar!" In later commercials starring Cookie Jarvis, also appearing was the one-and-only Cookie Crook, who had such an addiction to chocolate chip cookies that he felt the need to break into the homes of children who were eating Cookie Crisp (If only the Betty Ford Clinic had a Chocolate Chip Cookie wing – he might have been saved some embarrassment.) Day in and day out, kids would see the Cookie Crook attempt home invasion after home invasion in search of his favorite treat. During the tougher times of the 80s, wizards clearly weren't enough to keep Cookie Crook's kleptomaniac fingers away from kids' bowls. Cookie Cop was called in to save the day, each time hauling Cookie Crook away in his police car. That Cookie Crook must've had one heck of a lawyer! Each week, he'd come back for still more thievery. Cookie Crook even got others in on the act, like his dog, Chip, leading the poor dog to a life of cereal crime and an addiction to chocolate chip cookies so strong he'd have to howl "Cooooooookie Crisp!" In the late 1990s, it appeared as though Cookie Crook ran into a little more trouble than he could fend off legally - neither he, nor his dog, were to ever be seen again.
In 2003, General Mills, who'd purchased Ralston's ready-to-eat cereal line around the time of Cookie Crook's mysterious disappearance, came out with a new series of commercials featuring Chip's cousin, Howler, the wolf. Howler also had an affinity for the crispy cereal and shared the distinctive howl "Coooo-ookie Crisp!" Shortly thereafter, he took up his cousin's name and has since been known as Chip (Peculiar, isn't it?). He too, found a life of crime in his never-ending search for an unattended cookie-filled cereal bowl.
Though kids have had to defend their bowls of Cookie Crisp throughout the years, they could certainly understand how someone might end up in such a predicament. Cookie larceny is a crime that every child (and adult, for that matter) has been compelled to commit, thrusting his or her hand into an unguarded cookie jar the first moment that opportunity arises. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
