While there are many candies that rank high on the retro list, Mary Jane might just sit at the top, Queen of Retro Candies. The candies themselves are a decadent bite of peanut butter and molasses, and were named after the aunt of the family of brothers that created it, the Charles N. Miller Company. As inexpensive as the price might seem today, spending a nickel on a little bag of Mary Janes during The Great Depression was the same as spending around 60¢ today, making it a special-occasion memory infused delight for an entire generation.
Thanks to the folks at NECCO, who purchased the candy in 1990, we get to enjoy Mary Janes just about any time we choose. They have even become a popular Halloween candy, handed out to eager children with the buckets and pillowcases held out on the doorstep. Today, Mary Janes are as popular as ever as, thanks to pop culture’s trend to look back at the happy nostalgia of the good old days. Just let the soothing flavors of Mary Janes warm you up and take you back – after all, it is just penny candy.
