Candy and jewelry: a pairing of edible and elegance assured to show your love or satisfy your sweet tooth. And, for fans of all things sweet and stylish, it really didn't get much better than candy necklaces. Sitting pretty for years as the epitome of childhood fashion (until, of course, the luxurious Ring Pop came onto the scene), the candy necklace became an instant classic, one that's provided kids with enough memories to last a lifetime.
Both tasteful and tasty, Smarties Candy Necklaces were introduced in the late 1950s by Ce De Candy Inc., and kids proceeded to gobble them up. While most boys may have shunned the treat, it was a favorite for giving to sweethearts of all ages. Candy necklaces were simple. Tiny donut-shaped, multi-colored candies were strung along an elastic-type string with the ends tied together. Voila! It's a necklace!
After nibbling on a few pieces, the most common "issue" was the sticky factor. If left upon the neck, there was sure to be a gooey, colorful mess before too long. Of course, there was always the option of not eating any of it, or even waiting until the breaking point, when eating them all at once became a mandate from one’s inner child. Fans of the candy necklace have even sought other options, such as wearing the soon-to-be sticky jewelry on their wrist (doubled-up, of course!). At least there, a little bit of sticky wasn't quite as awkward.
No matter where you choose to wear it, candy necklaces remain a fun-time treat to be enjoyed by kids of all ages, eager to adorn their bodies with beads of colored sugar for all to admire.
