Why must everything so bad for us taste so darn good? And while we are asking questions, how is it that the Southern United States consistently come up with mouth watering delicacies like biscuits and gravy and pulled pork and pecan pie, stuff that makes our heart move a little slower but delights the tastebuds like they’ve never been delighted before? And when it comes to donuts, the south has never had much need for places like Dunkin’ Donuts or Winchell’s because they have their own version of the doughy treats and there is nothing quite like them. That’s right, we’re talking Krispy Kreme, the most sinful take on a donut you could ever imagine. You could tell people that the inventor of Krispy Kremes sold his soul to the devil for this donut recipe and they would probably believe you. These donuts are that good.

Ok, you might be saying, “I’ve had donuts. What is so special about a Krispy Kreme?” Well, if you get one while that little sign is flashing that says “hot donuts”, you’re in for a special treat. A freshly made Krispy Kreme donut seems to literally melt in your mouth. They are about as light as helium and drenched in a pure sugary glaze that is sure to satisfy even the most stubborn sweet tooth. Speaking of which, Krispy Kreme makes a variety of wonderful donuts, exotically flavored donuts such as their NY cheesecake donut but most people just want the regular old glazed version (as if there was anything “regular” about it). These are the ones that people line up for and these are the ones that you find yourself craving beyond any other.

So, if not from Lucifer himself, where did these donuts originate? Well, legend has it that a Mr. Vernon Rudolph won the recipe in a game of poker from a (where else?) New Orleans chef. He began selling the donuts in 1937 and word caught on that these were some amazing donuts. While primarily selling them to supermarkets, people kept asking if they could buy them fresh. Rudolph decided to begin offering them direct and his customers didn’t disappoint. By the 50’s Krispy Kreme donuts were available throughout the southern states. In recent years, they have branched out across the US and now you can find them just about anywhere, even in the supermarket.

However, be forewarned: buying a Krispy Kreme donut in a grocery store isn’t even remotely close to getting one fresh off the assembly line. Eat a store bought version and you may find yourself thinking, “What’s the big deal?” Eat a fresh one from one of the many Krispy Kreme outlets and you will see what all the hype is about. They aren’t for everyone, and they certainly aren’t good for you, but for donut lovers everywhere, there just isn’t anything quite like them.
