“Bite ‘em! Drink ‘em! Chew ‘em!”
Few can forget the surprise they got the first time they bit into a wax bottle. Basic instincts often lure first timers to bit off the top, to drink the “juice” inside and discard the bottle. The real treat, for many is the wax ready to chew once the juice is gone. Of course, once past the first few wax bottles, new methods would be discovered, like biting into the whole thing and chewing it at once, creating a taste explosion worthy of a special effects crew (and in some cases creating a need for stain removers).
Wax bottles were good for more than just a sugar rush; the wax could even help loosen up ready-to-drop baby teeth! What a way to get some extra Tooth Fairy money (only to be spent on more wax bottles)! Another great way to have a wax bottle is fresh from the fridge or even after a quick stint in the freezer. The icy cold goodness was a perfectly sweet remedy for any hot summer day!
Fans of Wax Bottles and its goofy cousin, Wax Lips, have a lot of thanks to give to early American confectioners, who perfected paraffin products for sweet-toothed and humorous consumption. Today, Nik-L-Nips, perhaps the most popular of wax bottles, the classic wax bottle candies aren’t as easy to find in convenience stores as they once were. More readily found in specialty candy shops, finding wax bottles can be a problem for those who ware geographically challenged. Luckily, many online retailers have taken note of the growing audience for such classic treats and are making them available to the internet-savvy masses. So bite ‘em, drink ‘em and chew ‘em… just for old-time’s sake.
