Nothing spelled out classy like Andes Chocolate Mints.  Okay, so maybe it doesn’t literally spell out c-l-a-s-s-y, but there was an implied quality in a restaurant that would have a dish of these available for patrons as they departed. And few things have been as welcoming to find perched atop a hotel pillow.  It’s certainly a little more difficult to hold a hotel in disfavor when you are experiencing smooth mint chocolate melting away in your mouth.

Andy’s Candies started as a small confectioner store in 1921; a wide variety of chocolates were handmade, boxed, and sold on-site. As the business prospered, the company grew to include an entire factory.  In search of a name befitting the new enterprise, the owners switched from the hometown-personal “Andy’s” to the more regal “Andes” that we know today. In 1950, the popular triple-layered Crème de Menthe candies were added to the product line.  In a world of corporate merges and name changes, there is an absence of information available on the history of these decadently delicious chocolates, except that they’re currently produced by Tootsie Roll Industries. Luckily, there is no absence of fond memories that many share of these little green foil-wrapped delicacies. They are one of those candies that seem as if they have always been around to tempt the sweet tooth, equally enticing in both appearance and flavor.

Each of the three silky layers is actually flavored the same, just colored different, making the candy easy to integrate into food recipes.  Brownies and cookies with Andes Chocolate Mints have become so popular that the makers of Andes have started producing baking chips, as well as their own line of cookies and cake rolls.  There are even Andes Chocolate Mint ice creams to be found from time to time.  And it should come as no surprise to aficionados of Andes Candies that Tootsie Roll proclaims the brand to be the number one after-dinner mint on the market today.

So, the next time you see the little green foil rectangles in a bowl (or if you’re fortunate enough, atop a perfectly fluffed pillow,) melt one in your mouth and be taken back to the smooth sweet memories of the first time you experienced one, when you discovered that a candy could actually make you feel classy.
