Release History:
1993 - Tom and Jerry: The Movie
A step away from the mindless violence of their origins, the 1990s film version of Tom and Jerry: The Movie focused instead on friendship and loyalty, rather than endless chases of, er, cat and mouse.
When Tom’s owners pack up to move to a new house, Jerry bums a ride. Tom will have none of that, however, and their ensuring skirmish leads to both of them falling out of van as it drives away. Having to survive alone now in the city, they meet dogs Puggsy and Frankie da Flea, who befriend and try to help them. Jerry saves Tom from a pack of mean alley cats, and then they meet Robyn Starling, a little girl who’s run away. Her father has supposedly been killed in an avalanche, and now she lives with her mean Aunt Figg.
Robyn takes Tom and Jerry with her after a policeman brings her back to Aunt Figg’s house. They find out that Robyn’s dad hasn’t been killed at all – he’s still alive, but Robyn is heir to a fortune that Aunt Figg controls only if Figg is her caretaker. Tom and Jerry plan a daring escape from the pound and then go off to help Robyn. In the meantime, Robyn’s father is flying through a deadly storm to get back to her. But Aunt Figg is taking no chances. She offers a reward for the capture of Robyn, but Tom and Jerry are there to keep her safe.
Richard Kind and Dana Hill played the voices of Tom and Jerry, respectively – a new angle for the traditionally silent pair. The music was composed by Henry Mancini, famous for his "Pink Panther" theme. The film skewed on the young side, stayed in theaters only a short while, and became a successful home video.
