Release History:
1986 - The Transformers: The Movie
Transformers started as a line of toys from Hasbro in 1984. You could change the shape of each toy – robots morphing to trucks, cars to airplanes, and the like. The toys were followed by a comic book series from Marvel a couple months later, and a syndicated cartoon by the end of the year. Kids were enthralled, and Transformers became the licensing story of the mid 80s.
Both the comic books and the cartoon followed the adventures of the good Transformers, the Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, and the bad Transformers, the Decepticons, led by Megatron. They were all originally from the planet Cybertron, but they crashed on Earth where they continued their aggressions in 1985. The stories continually introduced new characters and storylines.
The feature film version doesn’t fill the uninitiated in on any of the developing action. You had to come in knowing Transformers mythology, or the movie just didn’t make any sense. In this case, the film starts in 2005 on Cybertron, where Optimus Prime and Megatron have destroyed each other in a final battle. But it turns out it’s not so final. Unicron, a live mechanical planet who eats other planets, has revived Megatron and transformed him into Galvatron so that he can continue his evil habits in Unicron’s service.
The Autobot Matrix of Leadership is Unicron’s only weakness, and he intends to destroy the Autobots with the help of Galvatron. However, the new Autobot, Hot Rod, has other plans in store.
The movie tended to be on the violent side, earning a PG rating due to the killing of many characters during the several battle scenes, and the use of the “s” word by Spike Witwicky (later edited out on the home video version.)
The talented voice cast included Leonard Nimoy, Robert Stack, Judd Nelson, Eric Idle and Orson Welles (who died during the production). Regardless of the many Transformers fans, the film didn’t do very well at the box office during it’s brief time in theaters. It’s ended up as a cult favorite for Transfans, along with the syndicated cartoon followup, Transformers: Beast Wars.
