Release History:
1973 - Tom Sawyer
This 1973 film was a musical retelling of the classic story by Mark Twain. The songs, score, and screenplay were all written by songwriting team Robert B. and Richard M. Sherman, who had a slew of classics under their belt, including Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, and Charlotte's Web. The film starred Celeste Holm as Aunt Polly, Johnny Whitaker as Tom, Jodie Foster as Becky Thatcher, and Jeff East debuting as Huckleberry Finn.
Filmed partly on location in Missouri, the film tells the story of the adventures of Tom in 1850s Hannibal. The famous scenes are there, including the white washing scene, and the time when Tom and Huck play at being pirates, are assumed lost on the Mississippi, and wind up making an appearance at their own funeral. Tom has his first kiss with schoolmate Becky Thatcher, and witnesses a murder in the dark of night. Meanwhile, Aunt Polly doles out good-hearted discipline to the rough and tumble boy.
The score was nominated for an Academy Award, as well as the superb art direction and costume design. The sweet-natured film was a nostalgic throwback about good-hearted boys who were always getting into trouble. It lead to a sequel, Huckleberry Finn, the next year.
