Release History:

1994 - The Flintstones
2000 - The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas
The Flinstones was the longest-running cartoon in prime time (before The Simpsons took that honor) and various Saturday morning knockoffs such as Pebbles and Bamm Bamm, The New Fred and Barney Show, and The Flintstone Kids had been around for years. But it wasn’t until 1994 that the show got a live-action update. The new film featured John Goodman, Elizabeth Perkins, Rick Moranis, Rosie O'Donnell and Elizabeth Taylor, along with big budget special effects and elaborate art direction based on the original cartoon. It picked up where the animated program left off, complete with Stone Age gags such as producer credit for "Steven Spielrock" and a performance by rock group, The BC-52's.

The story begins with sleazy Slate Gravel Company executive Cliff Vandercave plotting with his assistant Rosetta Stone to embezzle company funds. At the same time, Fred Flintstone loans money to his best friend, Barney Rubble, so that Barney and his wife Betty can adopt a baby. Wilma, Fred’s wife, thinks what he’s doing is great, but Wilma’s bossy mother, Pearl Slaghoople, thinks Fred is a good-for-nothing lug.

To pay Fred back, Barney lets him switch tests with him during an executive competence exam at Slate Gravel. Barney’s high score gets Fred promoted, but then he’s got to fire Barney, who ended up with Fred’s low score. Cliff and Rosetta use Fred, who’s on a thrilling power trip now, to fire all the employees and line their pockets with the money. Finally, when Barney, Betty, and their new son Bamm Bamm get thrown out on the street, Fred knows it’s time to stop the bad guys before it goes any further.

The story was contributed to by over 30 writers, but it took back seat to the cool special effects, translating the cartoon into a special effects masterpiece. Iconic Flintstones aspects such as stone and wood cars powered by feet, pigs as garbage disposals, and purple dinosaur pet Dino, were carefully recreated on the big screen. The movie became a hit, and was followed by the sequel, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, in 2000.
