Release History:

1997 - George of the Jungle
He first swung his way through the jungle in the 1960’s, with Jay Ward’s syndicated children’s program. Then, in 1997, Disney made George of the Jungle into a live action film starring Brendon Frasier, and the bumbling, Tarzan-like jungle boy made a new generation of fans.

Boosted by a memorable theme song (“George, George, George of the Jungle, Strong as he can be…"), sung in this version by The Presidents of the United States of America, George was joined by animatronic jungle buddies, as well as actors in costume and special effects. The story begins when toddler George crash lands in the fictional African country of Buyuku and is adopted by Ape, who happens to be an ape. George grows up with his friends Tookie Tookie the toucan, Little Monkey, and Shep, the elephant who acts like a dog. One day, George rescues the San Francisco socialite Ursula Stanhope from a lion while she was in Buvuku to get away from her slimy fiancé Lyle Van de Groot. Ursula thinks the beefy George is pretty great.

George likes Ursula too, but having grown up in the jungle, he has no idea how to woo her. Ape isn’t much help, suggesting he beat his chest, show his fangs and throw grass. Meanwhile Lyle is in pursuit to get Ursula back, and his henchman have their own agenda to capture the legendary Bukuvu “white ape.” George and his friends escape Lyle and his goons, but when Ursula takes him back to San Francisco to meet her family, he’s got a whole new set of challenges to face.

The live action film took George’s goofy charm, the physical humor, and the witty off-screen narration (done by Keith Scott) from the original cartoon and made it into one of the most successful films of the summer of 1997.
