1989 - Ghostbusters II
They cleaned up the ghosts from the New York City streets in the first Ghostbusters film, and they thought their work was done. Unfortunately, those pesky ghosts just keep coming back for more – and you know who you’re gonna have to call.
Ghostbusters II begins with the boys having been banned from chasing ghosts by a court order. Egon is doing experiments on the environment and the human psyche, Winston and Ray are entertaining at kids’ birthday parties, and Peter is hosting “The World of the Psychic” on local cable. Peter’s ex-girlfriend Dana has since married and divorced another man, and is mother to baby Oscar.
Dana works as an art restorer and is working on a painting of the evil Vigo the Carpathian. Vigo is making plans to come back to the world and start a new reign of terror, but needs a human host in which to put his spirit. With the help of Dana’s boss Janosz Poha, Vigo uses little Oscar to come back to life.
Dana asks the Ghostbusters for help, but due to their court order, they’re arrested, with no help from their bumbling lawyer Louis Tully. They soon realize that New York is in serious danger from another supernatural disaster, due to the river of pink ectoplasm oozing beneath the city streets. The goo is caused by the collective anger of the people of the city, and the Ghostbusters have to inject a little love into the streets of the New York in order to foil Vigo and his plan for global apocalypse.
The sequel brought back all the talent of the original movie – actors Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, Ernie Hudon, and Annie Potts, along with a script written by Aykroyd and Ramis, and directed by Ivan Reitman. The soundtrack was also a hit, spawning the Bobby Brown single “On Our Own,” which reached #2 on the charts. The combination created another success in a summer that included blockbusters Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Batman, Back to the Future Part II, and Lethal Weapon 2. This was the last Ghostbusters film, and the further adventures of our ghost-fighting heroes continued in cartoons The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters on Saturday mornings.
