Release History:
1999 - Inspector Gadget
At the beginning of the film, a security guard named John Brown is dutifully protecting the laboratory of Dr. Artemus Bradford, a late scientist whose work involved attacking various robotic apparatus to the human body. His inventions attract the attention of billionaire industrialist and criminally minded Sandford Scolex, who attempts to burglarize the lab and, in the process, sets of an explosion that almost kills John Brown.
Enter the beautiful Dr. Brenda Bradford, daughter of the famed scientist, who uses her father’s technological achievements to rebuild Brown into the heavily (and somewhat comically) equipped crime fighter that would be forever known as Inspector Gadget. With springs in his step, telescopic limbs, and cranially-attached helicopter blades, Gadget is ready to take on the world.
Unfortunately, his new boss, Chief Quimby isn’t so impressed by the mechanically enhanced mega-cop and proceeds to assign the bionic bumbler to rather boring menial responsibilities such as rescuing kittens from trees. That all changes when Scolex, now armed with a bionic appendage of his own, hence his new nickname, “The Claw”, prepares to unleash a robotic army on the city. Based on the technology developed by Dr. Bradford, he creates a prototype called RoboGadget, a diabolical doppelganger of sorts and the only person who can stop it in its tracks is, you guessed it, Inspector Gadget.
Fans of the cartoon series were quick to notice that animated characters Penny (the Inspector’s niece) and her dog, Brian, weren’t quite given the same amount of screen time in the film. But every good hero needs a love interest and a niece certainly wasn’t an appropriate choice so Brenda Bradford became the love interest and Penny would take a backseat.
For the die-hard fan of the cartoon series, some of the changes were a little troublesome but it sure didn’t stop them from flocking to the theater. The film became a quick hit, thanks to a fast paced plot, surprising special effects wizardry, and most importantly, a whole plethora of nifty gadgetry that could only belong to someone with the name, Inspector Gadget.
