What do you do after spending a morning in your Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pajamas, scarfing down bowls of Ninja Turtles cereal, while watching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon on TV, followed by a Nintendo game of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, interrupted by a lunch of Chef Boyardee Ninja Turtles with Ninja Turtles chewy fruit snacks for dessert? Why, you go to the movie theater for a feature presentation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
Released in 1990, the film capitalized on the overwhelming popularity of this comic book-based license. The live action film was created using Jim Henson Productions’ technically advanced combination of body suits and animatronics, resulting in a surprisingly natural look.
The story of the turtles’ origins was lifted directly from the original comic strip. Splinter, the pet rat of a martial arts master, is accidentally exposed to the radioactive mutagen which turns him into a half rat/half human wise man. Splinter decides to train four turtles escaped from a pet shop in his ninja ways by exposing them to the radioactivity. The turtles - Michaelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and Leonardo – are perpetually more interested in pizza and joking around than in their ninja training, but they’re good guys and generally get the job done.
The city is being terrorized by a gang of teens called the Foot Clan and their leader, the steel-masked ninja called The Shredder. When Leo, Don, Mike and Raph are busy fighting them, they’re discovered by reporter April O’Neil, who’s not accustomed to interviewing humanoid turtles. But she keeps an open mind, and ends up being their contact with the human world when they’re not hiding down in the sewers. Splinter and the Turtles find out that video games are actually brainwashing the Foot Clan, the gang teams up with sports fan vigilante Casey Jones to put an end to their mischief once and for all.
The dark, PG-rated movie pulled more from the original comic strip than the cartoon had, and pleased both die-hard and casual fans. The result was one of the most popular movies of the year, and became one of New Line Cinema’s biggest hits. CBS ended up moving the TV cartoon from weekday syndication to Saturday morning, where it was a ratings hit for years. The original film was followed up by two sequels, until the flighty adolescent audience got distracted by the Power Rangers.
