Release History:
1995 - Toy Story
1999 - Toy Story 2
1999 - Toy Story 2
After the groundbreaking success of the first movie, Toy Story 2 continued the adventures of our toy friends. Disney had originally planned to make this a direct-to-video release, but after viewing the initial footage, they were convinced that production company Pixar had once again created a major motion picture. The sequel was also written and co-directed by John Lasseter, who had done the first movie, and feedback for the follow up was even better than the original.
When young Andy accidentally rips his cowboy toy Woody’s arm, Woody can’t come along with Andy to camp. Woody is terribly disappointed, but fellow toy Buzz Lightyear tries to convince him that it’s not the end of the world. Wheezy, a broken squeak toy penguin sadly reminds them that eventually all toys get old and broken and wind up at a yard sale. That holds true for Wheezy, and when he ends up in an actual yard sale, Woody tries to rescue him. During the attempt, Woody gets picked up by covetous toy collector Al McWiggin who wants to buy him. Andy’s mother tells him Woody isn’t for sale, but Al won’t take no for an answer. He steals Woody instead and drives away.
Meanwhile, Buzz and the other toys - Slinky Dog, dinosaur Rex, piggy bank Hamm and Mr. Potato Head – make a plan to rescue Woody from Al’s Toy Barn. But Woody isn’t there – Al has taken him back to his high rise apartment, where he discovers that he’s actually part of a set, Woody’s Round-Up Gang, the stars of an old puppet show on TV. He meets his Round-Up co-starts Bullseye the horse, Stinky Pete the Prospector, and cowgirl Jessie. Al plans to sell the complete set to a Japanese museum.
Woody wants nothing more than to get back home to Andy, but he’s moved by Jessie’s story that eventually all toys are given up by their kid owners. Now he’s not sure what to do. And in the meantime, Buzz and the gang are still trying to rescue him from Al’s Toy Barn, overcoming the dangers and the Barbie dolls to get Woody back.
Original cast members Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles, Jim Varney and more lent their voices again to the second installment. Songwriter Randy Newman also returned, performing and writing “When She Loved Me,” which was nominated for an Oscar. Disney and Pixar had created another hit, even including “outtakes” of the film over the closing credits. They ended up with their direct-to-video release with the third movie, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins in 2000, followed by a Buzz Lightyear series airing on Saturday mornings.
